The area we're staying in is great: leafy suburban streets, very family friendly, close to the National Mall. And its occupants seem more svelte than the norm, which I'd put down to the inordinate amount of "buggy jogging" that I've seen.
But there's another, more sinister reason for the svelteness: you can't afford to buy food here. Croissants start at $2.50 each, Philippa bought two tuna steaks for $27, and after buying this 'monstrous' piece of American cheese (mostly rind) I discovered it cost $5.60.
